Fishing Topwater
Top Water: Term used to describe fishing methods where the bait sits a top of the water when worked. Examples are: Buzz Baits, Frogs, Pop R’s, Toads, and some Swim Baits.
Frog: Frog Fishing is typically a warm water pattern. There are all types of frogs on the market but most are designed to be walked across weed mats and open water. Frogs come in a variety of sizes and shapes but fishing these baits are all relatively the same. The goal is to walk the bait across the type of weed or water you are fishing changing the cadence periodically to encourage a strike. The strike is very visual and most people react before they feel the pressure of the fish so key point here wait till you feel the pressure of the fish pulling then set hard cross his eyeballs they say. A stout rod an at least 50lb braid will be need for this method of fishing.
Buzz Baits are top water lures used more in the summer and fall when the water temps are higher. This lure is used for active fish feeding on the top and is usually found in two sizes: 1/2 ounce and 3/8 ounce. The style of the blade or prop can be used for different situations. A lighter lure with a 4- blade plastic prop will rise higher in the water. A heavier metal blade lure will make a distinctive squeaking sound as opposed to a plastic blade. The best time to use buzz baits is during the summer and fall when water temps are higher. Focus on times when you see fish feeding on top (typically early and late in the day). To create more buoyancy in the water, use a lizard trailer. It helps keep the lure up on top better.
