Fishing Swimbaits

Swim Baits like other reaction baits come in various sizes and shapes and are made of soft plastics as well as hard plastics and wood.  Swim baits are most often used in the pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn periods as well as during the fall feed.  These baits are designed to catch active, feeding fish looking for a big meal.  A typical swim bait has the look of a fish in both appearance and motion in the water and are designed to be as lifelike as possible in most situations but some exceptions do exist.

Swim baits can be fished on the bottom or throughout the water column depending on where the fish are positioning themselves.  The baits range in size from 4 inches to 12 inches.  Most swim baits are thrown on a special rod and a slower-geared reel is used.
