Fishing Blades
Blades: The term “blade” is used when speaking of methods or presentations when the lure has a blade component. Examples are: Spinner Baits and Chatter Baits, each explained below.
Spinner Baits often are used as a search bait. They are great for throwing in and around cover because of the weedless design. Primary weight is 1/2 ounce under most situations but heavy and lighter models are available for unique conditions. The blade can vary in size and shape. For example, long, slender, willow-type blades are used when a higher presentation and faster retrieve is needed. A bigger, rounder blade such as a Colorado is used when a deeper thump and vibration is needed. Short-arm blades are used when you need the lure to sink faster or flutter down. Great times to throw this lure are: during the spawning period; when you have wind on the water; when bait fish are present and you see fish busting on them; later in the fall when the fish are feeding up; and finally sometimes even in winter. This lure is a must in your arsenal!
Chatter Baits are a jig-style lure that have a blade positioned at the front adding vibration to the lure. Chatter baits can be used like a spinner bait, crank bait or jig retrieved through the water with similar presentation such as the methods listed above. This lure comes in several sizes but primary sizes are 3/8 and 1/2 ounce. This lure is versatile and can be used throughout the year. My favorite method of working is running it close to the bottom and ripping it each time I feel a weed or hit bottom.
